Princess Bari was the first mudang(female korean shaman) of Korea. Her story goes like this according to legend. She was of royal blood as were her parents...Her parents wished to have a son instead of her and casted her out. Abandoned and let out to fend for herself she comes back to take care of her ailing parents that are about ready to die....to heal them later. She has to travel to the underworld for the medicine to cure her parents and meets untold dangers,hurdles and unspeakable things she faced while trying to get it. A savior,” Gwaneum-bosal ( Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion)” all of a sudden appears to aid her on her journey. Which then her supernatural gifts flexed and tried sucessfully that is why modern korean shamans call on her to guide a soul under her watchful protection across to the underworld.
